How to do one room in two different styles

A bit of drama with a traditional take

This style lends a lot of character from the surrounding walls. Dare a darker shade to give the room a rich, dramatic mood. Also, it has a way of nicely framing the objects you hang on it.

The building blocks of a unified look

Furnish by building from a neutral base. The organic shapes of the sofa and cushions add dynamic. Together with traditional details and patterns, the result is a pleasantly soft expression.

“Combining patterns – also very different ones – has a way of complementing each other to create a strong or playful expression.”

Elin Stierna, IKEA interior designer

Creating a more modern style

“The room is still the same,” says interior designer Elin Stierna, “only taken in another direction. The common denominator are the soft materials and organic shapes. Although individually different, they come together likes pieces in a puzzle.”

Experiment with patterns and textiles

Patterns are a treasure when it comes to adding a unique touch. Experiment to create a strong blend of patterns, textures and textiles. And by all means, mix! The very element of variety works in your favour.
